Awning fabrics are available in a wide variety of appealing colors, patterns and fabric selections. Today's fabric advances have been fueled in part by the fact that improved synthetic yarns are the basis for many laminated fabrics, giving them greater strength and flexibility. Coatings, laminates and topcoatings are common methods to equip fabrics with protective qualities. Today's fabrics can withstand wind, sun and rain, yet they retain their flexibility and good looks for years. All awning fabrics have been rigorously tested in laboratory and field situations for such performance characteristics as weathering, durability, and flame-retardancy. The fabrics used for awnings and canopies will differ slightly in weight and translucency. Your local awning manufacturer can advise you on the best choice for your home or building.
The following are primary fabrics used in PAMA's Awning and Canopy Fabric Specifier's Guide:
Woven acrylic; woven solution dyed polyester; woven inherently flame retardant fiber; vinyl laminated polyester; vinyl laminated or coated polyester for backlighting; PVC or PVC coated polyester; acrylic, vinyl or resin-coated polyester or polyester/cotton; vinyl laminated or coated mesh; acrylic painted cotton or polyester; expanded PTFE.
